Hackett was born in Pimlico, London and attended the Sloane Grammar School, Chelsea.

He grew up having access to various musical instruments, such as the recorder and mouth organ, but did not develop an interest in the guitar until the age of twelve, when he started playing single notes. By fourteen, he was learning chords and experimenting with chord progressions, although he never received any formal instruction. Hackett’s earliest musical influences were classical (Johann Sebastian Bach) and opera (Mario Lanza). He has stated that his compositions are still influenced by them. Hackett also has cited numerous British blues artists as influences, namely Danny Kirwan, Peter Green, and various guitarists in John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers.

Watcher of the Skies: Genesis Revisited (UK release titled, “Genesis Revisited”) was a project put together by Steve Hackett to pay tribute to his former band Genesis. It features songs originally released by Genesis during Hackett’s tenure with the group (1971–77). One track, “Déjà Vu”, was partially written by Peter Gabriel in 1973; Hackett completed the song for inclusion on this album. Another song, “Waiting Room Only,” is a complete reworking of “The Waiting Room,” an instrumental from 1974’s The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. There was also a completely new Hackett song, “Valley Of The Kings.”
